Lease or credit: how to finance your car in 2026

Car financing has changed profoundly in recent years. In 2025, lease-with-purchase-option (LOA) accounted for 92.2% of new-vehicle financing, up from 91.4% a year earlier. On the used market, the shift is even sharper: 47.7% of financing, up 10 points.

Why such a shift

The rise in average new-car prices — around 25 to 35% over a few years by some estimates — makes cash purchases or classic credit less accessible for many households. Leasing, with its calibrated monthly payments and often-reduced down payment, keeps a monthly budget under control, even if it means never owning the vehicle.

Classic credit, meanwhile, is declining for the second year running: around €843 million in production in 2025, down 9.4%, dropping back below the symbolic one-billion-euro mark.

Lease, long-term lease, credit, cash: the key differences

A lease (LOA) lets you buy the vehicle at the end of the contract at a price fixed in advance. A long-term lease (LDD) doesn't offer that option — the vehicle is returned at the end, often with a contractual mileage cap. Classic credit makes the buyer the owner from day one, with monthly payments that include interest (around 3.5 to 7% APR in 2026 depending on term). Cash purchases remain the rarest, but avoid any financing cost.

The right choice depends on your usage

High or irregular annual mileage doesn't sit well with the often-strict mileage caps of leasing and long-term leasing. Conversely, predictable usage and a tight monthly budget make leasing particularly relevant — especially since the displayed monthly payment allows a direct comparison with another vehicle's payment, new or used.

That's why every vehicle listed on Compar'Car systematically shows an indicative monthly payment next to the price: the financing method is as much a part of the decision as the powertrain or the vehicle's condition.
